Our summer season is anchored by a mainstage production of Mozart and da Ponte’s third operatic collaboration, Così fan tutte. The opera premiered in 1790, and tells a story about the romantic struggles of young love and the turmoil that results when careful commitments clash against impulsive desires. It also includes a fair bit of foolishness and dueling disguises!
Our production is led by the brilliant artistic collaboration of conductor Rosemary Thomson, and director Michael Cavanagh. Together, they set the action in a pre-Second World War Country club, and create a production of Così that highlights the musical genius of Mozart, and the complexly layered wit of da Ponte.
Thomson is well-known as the beloved Music Director of the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. This summer, she adds to this role as she brings her considerable operatic expertise to the valley in her dual role as Opera Kelowna’s Interim Artistic Director, and the conductor for Così. Joining her, Michael Cavanagh will bring Così to life on our stages. He is celebrated for his insightful and innovative work in operatic staging. He has directed over 150 productions of established and new repertoire in Canada, the USA and Europe, and will be directing a new production of Così this fall at San Francisco Opera.
We are delighted to offer the Opera Kelowna premiere of this operatic gem in August 2020. Join us for the mainstage production, and for a range of community events designed to offer every kind of operatic experience. We invite you to fall in love with opera – either for the first time, or, all over again.
